Nature needs our help – and we need nature. We can give Hawke’s Bay’s local native species and natural landscapes a helping hand and connect with the environment by taking part in Conservation Week/Te Wiki Tiaki Ao Tūroa activities between 14 – 22 September 2019. This year marks 50 years of Conservation Week, an initiative led by the Department of Conservation but supported by hundreds of people and groups across the community. We’re reflecting on five decades of people working to save species and restore habitats, inspiring us for the next 50 years of protecting our native taonga. This year’s theme, “Nature Needs Us”, is encouraging people to get involved in conservation-related activities during the week. Here in the Hawke’s Bay you can join us during Conservation Week to participate in activities that reflect the special nature of our place.

Local highlights include:
Predator Free Urban Hawke’s Bay Launch & Trap Giveaway. Saturday 14 September, 2pm-4pm. Napier Soundshell, Marine Parade, Napier.
Join with urban residents to tackle predators in Napier – we have over 900 predator traps to give away. This Predator Free project is a brand-new initiative aiming to revitalise urban nature in the Hawke’s Bay. Free sausage sizzle.
A’Deanes Bush Community Planting Day
Sunday 15 September, 10am – 1:00pm. Makaretu Rd, Ongaonga, Central Hawke’s Bay
Great family planting day. Bring: Spade, gardening gloves, gumboots, hat, suitable wet weather gear if required. Free Sausage Sizzle.
Weed swap- Swap your weed for a free native plant. Saturday 21 September, 10am- 1pm, Napier Soundshell, Marine Parade, Napier.
DOC and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are teaming up to encourage locals to identify and tackle weeds in our district. Staff are also able to advise on the best native plants suited for our Hawke’s Bay environment. Bring along a weed to swap for a free native plant.
Te Angiangi Marine Reserve- Rocky Shore Adventure. Sunday 15 September, 10 am- 1pm. Aramoana woolshed, 80 Shoal Beach Road, Waipawa.
Introduce your family to our Hawke’s Bay marine reserve at Te Angiangi. Kiwi Conservation Club & DOC are running a Rocky Shore Adventure at Te Angiangi Marine Reserve. To register email lmcnamara@doc.govt.nz
Kiwi Creche Kleen Up. Sunday 22 September 10am-2pm. Pan Pac Kiwi Creche at Opouahi Scenic Reserve, Pohokura Road, Tutira.
The kiwi creche at Opouahi plays an important role in helping kiwi numbers recover in the Hawke’s Bay. Help us clear vegetation from around the fence at the kiwi creche, and meet the people passionate about this project. Free Sausage sizzle. Registration appreciated but not essential.
